Christian Bale

Christian Bale did something pretty classy yesterday when he visited the victims of the Aurora, Colorado shooter. Here's a painting I did of him. I even managed to squeeze in a couple of hidden Bat logos.

Bruce Campbell

Here's a painting I did of one of personal favorites, the great Bruce Campbell. If you haven't seen the Evil Dead films, especially Army of Darkness, then you really need to sign up for Netflix and get watching now. The reference for this illustration, incidentally, comes from Evil Dead 2, to be precise. Above is the final color version. Below I thought you'd like to see the black and white painting that lies beneath. I don't always work with this method, but sometimes you can create some great effects by painting entirely in grayscale first, then use a series of color, overlay and multiply layers in Photoshop to create some very cool effects. I thought the overall caricature ended up having a bit of a Graham Ingels Tales from the Crypt look. The wacky color scheme above shows the heavy influence of the great Basil Gogos, who painted most of the Famous Monsters of Filmland covers when I was growing up.

James Franco

I saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes the other day (terrific movie, BTW). As anyone who does caricatures for a living can tell you, after you do it for a while you start to size up everyone you see to determine how you'd distort that person's features. In this case, after staring at James Franco up on the screen for a couple hours I began to notice his overlong chin and ever-stoned look. Eventually, those observations led to this.

Daniel Day Lewis

Here's a painting of Daniel Day Lewis I did for this week's Caricaturama challenge over on Facebook. The reference for this one comes from one of my favorite movies I've seen Lewis in, There Will Be Blood. I intentionally kept the brushstrokes blocky and I was certainly channeling my inner J.C. Leyendecker here.

Finished this up tonight. I'm putting together a tutorial on how I painted this one. I'll post the how-to soon.

Morgan Freeman

Here's my latest painting, in my humble opinion, one of our greatest American actors, Morgan Freeman. This one had a strange process to it, that went like this: 1. Draw a colored pencil sketch of Morgan Freeman. 2. Scan sketch in and paint over it. 3. Decide the aforementioned sketch really didn't look much like Morgan Freeman at all then paint over the whole thing until it no longer resembled the original sketch, but ultimately looked a lot more like the actor.

Painting John Malkovich

I've been extraordinarily busy lately, but I still wanted to take the time to paint this. This is Photoshop over the ballpoint pen sketch seen below. You'll notice I made a number of adjustments as I went along.

Marty Feldman

Here's a quickie painting I did of the late great Marty Feldman as Igor from Young Frankenstein. This was about two and a half hours in Photoshop.

I painted Indiana Jones, just for the fun of it. This is about five hours in Photoshop.

Bond, James Bond

I've been a James Bond fan since I was a kid. As far as recent movies go, I loved Casino Royale and absolutely hated Quantum of Solace. Even still, I think Daniel Craig is a pretty darn good Bond. Here's my latest painting of him.

Javier Bardem

Digital painting of one of my favorite movie villains of recent years, Javier Bardem as Chigurh from No Country for Old Men. About three and a half hours in Photoshop.

Vincent Price

I've loved horror movies ever since I was a little kid. I remember staying up to all hours to watch the late night horror show. Very often those movies would star the late great Vincent Price. Here's my tribute to the man. I wanted to let the brush strokes show in this image in order to create the sort of look you'd see in an old movie poster from the 50s or 60s. This was rendered entirely in gray tones with color brushed in over that layer.
